General Meeting

October 19th, 2016

 

The general meeting of Jackson Middle School PTA was called to order at 6:36pm, Wednesday, October 19th, 2016 by President Debora Cox.  A quorum of members was present.

President Deborah Cox called for a vote to approve the August and September minutes.  All present approved.

Treasurer Kelly Christopherson reviewed the Cookie Dough fundraising results:

  • $21,000 (approximately) in sales (compared with approximately $22,000 in 2015). The net profit was approximately $11,200.
  • Principal Kevin Crotchett will submit Bernstein classroom request and teacher allocations to Kelly Christopherson.
  • President Debora Cox indicated that remittances for membership should be coming any day.
  • Kelly confirmed that she applied for non profit status with Pay Pal in August and they confirmed us on 8/28/16. We now receive a 32% discount on online credit card processing PP fee.

 

Vice President Jessica Christiansen will send the PTA newsletter to Principal Crotchett to add to the JMS update.  Included in the update will be:

  • Need for volunteers for Learnstein Event
  • There is consideration of adding a Boys Drama night to the Teacher Sign Up Boards to increase interest in drama
  • Spreadsheets are in progress for Teacher Sign Ups
  • Dessert and salad will be added to the menu. Donations are requested
  • Advertising will start soon: 16” x 9” posters will be added to the boards for hallways and Jessica will send information to Jen or Kevin to add to monitors.
  • Food handlers cards are required by all servers
  • After Learnstein, a push will be made for Bernie Bash volunteers

 

Vice President Jessica Christiansen reviewed volunteer needs for Volunteer Coordinator Marci Forbes, who could not be in attendance.

  • Volunteers needed for 7th grade Makers field trips
  • Book Fair volunteers needed
  • Sign up needed for Teacher Conference Meals
  • There is a need to find a volunteer lead for the Teacher Appreciation meals in January, March & May
  • Marci will send Principal Crotchett details, so that he can send out a volunteer specific JMS newsletter

 

Principal Kevin Crotchett reviewed upcoming Parent Teacher Conferences:

  • Flyer coming out Friday
  • November 9th & 10th
  • 8:30am-Noon; 3:15-5pm; 6-8:30pm
  • There will be onsite Somali translation one of the nights
  • There will be Spanish translation on the 10th
  • Principal Crotchett and Vice Principal Crabtree will give four 15 minute presentations, both in morning and evening sessions

  • Vice President Jessica Christiansen suggested sending out a notice about what to expect at the conferences
  • Next Principal coffee chat is December 2nd.

 

President Deb Cox discussed:

  • Linking a dedicated volunteer list directly from JMS the site.
  • Ways for parents to contribute financially to the JMS PTA, including Fred Meyer Points that must be relinked each year.
  • Tom Hamman from Lake Oswego P.D. to discuss online safety in January
  • Pizzicato fundraiser night in December

Cookie Dough Chair Greg Anderson reviewed Cookie Dough results as well.

  • 158 students participated
  • Diane Smith will chair next year

 

Past Treasurer Greg Anderson reminded board that the audit needs to be completed.  Current Treasurer Kelly Christopherson will see if Diane Smith can do audit.  Audit is due November 1st.

Wilson High School 8th-Grade Family Night and Open House

Letters About Literature – 24th Annual Contest

Sponsored by the Library of Congress

Students who participate in this contest will write a letter to an author (dead or alive) answering the question: How did an author’s work change your view of the world or yourself?

If you would like to know more about this writing opportunity, please email Virginia Hayter, vhayter@pps.net, or visit the contest website here. Letters are due to Mrs. Hayter by January 2, 2017.

LEARNStein and Grandparents/Special Friends Night

Bring the whole family to Jackson on November 18th for LEARNStein plus Grandparents & Special Friends Night! Parents will have time to learn more about our unique and amazing Bernstein Artful Learning Method, while students can take guests on a tour through their school and show examples of Bernstein work product. A spaghetti dinner (with vegetarian and gluten-free options) will be open from 5:30pm to 7pm ($7 per person or $25 for a family of four or more).

Fun party board experiences (where teachers donate their time outside of school hours for activities with the students such as bowling and capture the flag) will be on sale, and the evening will conclude with a concert. Cash or checks payable to “JMS PTA”, and Visa/Mastercard are accepted.

Jackson Middle School PTA

General Meeting

September 21st, 2016

The general meeting of Jackson Middle School PTA was called to order at 6:36pm, Wednesday, September 21st, 2016 by President Debora Cox.  A quorum of members was present.

With Treasurer Kelly Christopherson a review of budget and balances was held:

  • Kelly Christopherson indicated that the first turn-in day of the Cookie Dough fundraiser had raised $12,000 with that amount expected to increase.
  • Crotchett indicated that the classroom funds request would be made soon.

Vice President Jessica Christiansen discussed Learnstein/Special Friends Day and made a request for volunteers.  A request for volunteers for the Bernie Bash was also made.

Membership Lead Robin Atkinson reviewed PTA membership sign ups received.  153 sign up to date.

Volunteer Coordinator Marci Forbes reviewed volunteer needs, especially cookie dough distribution on Friday, September 30th as kids return from Outdoor School as well as other upcoming needs.

President Deb Cox gave an overview of how the Parent Teacher conferences function at JMS.

Principal Kevin Crotchett presented the principal’s report.

  • Presentation of Intro to Success! & AVID and how they will be implemented at JMS.
  • Bernstein will have a common project in Language Arts and Social Studies beginning this year in 7th This will lead to the continuity of the program as some of the original teachers began to retire.
  • Coffee Chats last Friday of every month. Next one is Friday September 30th.
  • Full Chrome initiative at JMS has allowed the school to do the Insight Cards as part of Intro to Success!

President Deb Cox reminded parents about the school store and its hours of operation on Monday and Wednesday from 9am to 9:15am.

Volunteer Webmaster Aimee Knier, sent out an appeal for volunteers to manage website content.

President Deb Cox reviewed ways for parents to contribute financially to the JMS PTA.

  • FM Points and Amazon Smile program

President Deb Cox made a request for topics for future business and suggested, as an example, that we have the Lake Oswego Police Department return to discuss online internet safety.

General Meeting

August 31st, 2016

Call to Order

The general meeting of Jackson Middle School PTA was called to order at 7:01pm, Wednesday, August 31st, 2016 by President Debora Cox.  A quorum of members was present.

President Deb Cox welcomed the large (30 attendees) group to the meeting and reviewed the board’s communication push and ways for members to get involved (Jackson Parents PTA page, newsletter).  Deb reviewed upcoming events and gave an introduction to Full Chrome and Bernstein.

Attendees introduced themselves.

Mr. Parrot led an overview of the Bernstein Artful Learning program and why it is beneficial to the student body.

With President Deb Cox the Standing Rules were approved.

  • Jessica Christiansen motioned to approve
  • Diane Smith 2nd the motion
  • The motion was approved by majority

With Treasurer Kelly Christopherson a presentation of the budget was held:

  • Alice Forbes questioned the viability of the fundraising goals for the Bernie Bash and General Appeal. Treasurer Kelly Christopherson explained that the line item was shifted from Direct Giving-Full Chrome to General Appeal+Matching Gifts.  No further questions.
  • Crotchett led a discussion of Full Chrome for new parents.

With Treasurer Kelly Christopherson the budget was approved.

  • Diane Smith motioned to approve
  • Alice Forbes 2nd the motion
  • The budget was passed with majority

Membership Lead Robin Atkinson and President Deb Cox led an overview of membership and how to join.

Greg Anderson discussed the cookie dough fund raiser and made an appeal for a co-chair.

Vice President Jessica Christiansen led an overview of the Lernstein event and the need for additional help on the committee.

Free and Reduced Lunch Applications Due

Students who were receiving free or reduced-price meal benefits last school year must fill out a NEW meal application for the 2016-17 school year. If benefits are denied or reduced when the new application is approved, families will have ten days before the change in eligibility takes effect. Students who have NOT submitted a NEW application will be required to pay full price for school meals starting Tuesday, October 11, 2016.
